2023 Scholarship Application

Eamonn O’Loghlin Scholarship Fund Background

Established in 2013 in memory of the CNE’s then-Director of Sponsorship & Partnerships who passed away suddenly that year, the Eamonn O’Loghlin Scholarship Fund bestows grants to assist outstanding post-secondary students as they pursue their studies. Students employed by the Canadian National Exhibition or Exhibition Place, who work at the annual CNE, are eligible to apply. Scholarship recipients exemplify the values of the CNE Foundation and honour Eamonn O’Loghlin’s indomitable spirit, his love for Canada, and his commitment to youth, community service and the CNE.

Application Deadline:

The application deadline is Sunday, September 17, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Please note the online system will not accept applications beyond this time.

Available Scholarships

Each year, the CNE Foundation awards two $1,500 scholarships to two post-secondary students. The scholarship funding can be used to assist with costs related to a post-secondary program, such as tuition, course fees or course books.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to seasonal CNE employees or Exhibition Place employees hired on behalf of the CNE to work at the event:

  • The employee must be in good standing and have completed their full work term.
  • The employee must be enrolled in an eligible post-secondary program. Note: The CNE Foundation considers recognized university, college or trade programs as eligible post-secondary programs.
  • Past recipients, and children or dependents of CNE Foundation, CNE or Exhibition Place employees, or CNE/CNE Foundation Board Directors are not eligible to apply.
Application Process

Please ensure that you submit the following mandatory components with your application to qualify:

  • Contact information
  • Proof of enrollment in a recognized university, college or trades program for the fall of 2023
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation (see note below)
  • Your personal opinion essay on the 2023 selected topic (maximum 3,750 characters or approximately 750 words)
  • Parent/guardian consent (if under 18 years of age)

You will have the option to save your online application and return to it before the application deadline. Please note that all components must be submitted with your application at the same time, by the application deadline.

Note: For clarification, we are looking for two complete letters of recommendation, as opposed to contact information for your references for us to be in touch with.

In terms of the recommendation letters themselves, they should help reinforce your application with the selection committee. The letters could reference your character, work ethic, work or school performance, community service work, etc., to help the committee with their assessment of the applications.

Examples of individuals to approach for your recommendation letters could include a supervisor from a paid job or a volunteer experience, a teacher, a professor, or a community or religious leader, to name a few. The individual should not be related to you, but should also be someone who is familiar enough with you to recommend that an academic scholarship be awarded to you.

2023 Personal Opinion Essay Topic

Financial literacy is an important life skill for youth and this is even more so the case during times of changes in the economy. During the recent past, due to various factors, we’ve seen higher inflation rates and interest rates, and the cost of housing is higher in terms of rent and mortgage payments. There have also been changes in the job market, including changes in youth employment numbers.

Please reflect on the role of financial literacy in navigating important life decisions and positively impacting the futures of youth, and the greater economy.

How does your employment at the CNE impact you and help you prepare for your future, financially and otherwise?
